Choosing a Powerlifting Weight Class: The Maths Nobody Runs

Before you enter a meet at 83 instead of 93, there is a calculation worth doing. It takes two minutes, it uses your own numbers, and it usually says the cut is not worth what you think it is.

Entries close in six weeks and you weigh 86.4 kg. The class below you is 83. The class you would enter today is 93, where you would be one of the lightest people in the group. Someone in your gym has already told you to cut, someone else has told you to eat, and neither of them has done any arithmetic.

Knowing how to choose a powerlifting weight class is mostly a matter of doing that arithmetic before you commit, because the three things you might be optimising for pull in different directions. You can chase a class placing. You can chase a coefficient score. You can chase the largest number the platform will ever see next to your name. Those are not the same objective and they very often want different bodyweights.

The useful part is that the maths is genuinely quick. You need your current bodyweight, your realistic total, and one calculation you can do on a phone.

What follows is that calculation, the class lists, and a candid view on when cutting pays and when it is theatre.

The short answer

Pick your class by working out what you are actually competing for.

If you want to win your class at a specific local meet, look at that meet’s results from the last two or three editions, find where the winning totals sit, and pick the class where your realistic total lands you highest. Being the heaviest lifter in a class is an advantage; being 6 kg under the limit is throwing away free weight.

If you want the best coefficient score, run the break-even. Dropping bodyweight raises your DOTS or GL coefficient, but it also costs you total. At around 83 kg, one kilogram of bodyweight lost is worth about 4 kg of total. Lose more total than that and the cut has made you worse.

If you want your biggest possible total, do not cut at all. Compete at whatever your fed and fuelled bodyweight is, and let the class fall where it falls.

Below national level, I would argue the third option is right for most people most of the time.

The class lists, and the important caveat

Weight classes differ by federation and they have changed within living memory. The IPF restructured its classes in 2011 and revised the women’s classes again in the early 2020s. Other federations kept the older structure. Some have their own.

Take that table as a starting point and nothing more. Class lists are set in federation rulebooks, rulebooks get amended between seasons, and a meet run under a federation’s international rules may differ from one run under a national affiliate’s. Before you enter anything, open the rulebook the meet page names and read the classes for yourself. It takes two minutes and it prevents the specific humiliation of cutting to a class that no longer exists.

Notice how differently the two structures behave in the middle. An 86.4 kg lifter is a light 93 in the IPF and a light 90 in USPA, with the 82.5 class sitting further away than the IPF’s 83. The same body, two different decisions, purely because of where the lines were drawn.

The three reasons to pick a class, and why they conflict

Placing at the meet you have actually entered

This is the one people underweight, and it is often the most rational. Local and regional meets have thin classes. A class with four entries and a class with fourteen offer completely different odds, and you can look this up.

Pull the results from the last two or three editions of the meet. Count entries by class. Look at the winning total in each. If the 93 class has been won with 640 kg twice running and the 83 class needed 660, and you can total 645, the decision makes itself and it has nothing to do with coefficients.

Do not overfit. Entries fluctuate, one strong lifter can turn an easy class into a hard one, and you will not know the field until the roster goes up. Treat it as a probability, not a plan.

Maximising your coefficient score

If your goal is Best Lifter, a national ranking, or simply a number you are proud of, you are optimising DOTS or GL rather than a placing. Now bodyweight is a continuous variable and the class limits barely matter: what matters is the trade between the total you lose and the coefficient you gain.

Being 6 kg under a class limit is not a problem here. It is arguably ideal, since you get the coefficient of a lighter lifter without paying for a hard cut.

Lifting the most weight

The simplest goal and the most underrated. Some lifters just want the biggest total they will ever hit, and the honest answer is that they should compete slightly heavy, well fed, and never see a sauna. Strength and bodyweight correlate for good mechanical reasons, and every kilogram you strip off is a kilogram of muscle, glycogen and mechanical advantage you are asking your squat to manage without.

The break-even maths of cutting

Here is the calculation that settles most arguments.

Your DOTS score is your total multiplied by a coefficient that depends only on bodyweight. If you drop bodyweight, the coefficient rises. If your total falls by exactly enough to cancel that rise, your score is unchanged. That crossover point is your break-even, and you can compute it precisely for any pair of bodyweights.

For a lifter scoring around 400 DOTS, the break-even looks like this:

Men’s DOTS coefficients. The percentages hold reasonably well at other score levels; the absolute kilograms scale with your total.

Read the right-hand column. A 59 kg lifter can afford to lose 1.39 percent of their total per kilogram of bodyweight and still come out level. A 120 kg lifter can only afford 0.29 percent. Cutting is roughly five times more forgiving at the light end of the sport than at the heavy end, which is not a fact you will hear in most gym conversations.

That single number reframes the whole question. If you are a 120 kg lifter thinking about dropping 4 kg to make a class, the break-even says your total must fall by less than 8 kg. Anyone who has done a real cut at that bodyweight will tell you 8 kg is optimistic.

Worked example: 86.4 kg, do you go 83 or 93?

Take Diego, who weighs 86.4 kg fed and rested and can realistically total 610 kg in the next twelve weeks: a 220 squat, a 145 bench and a 245 deadlift. He competes in a federation that scores DOTS.

Start with the status quo. At 86.4 kg the DOTS denominator is 757.09, so his score is 610 × 500 ÷ 757.09 = 402.9. He would enter the 93 class, 6.6 kg under the limit.

Option A: cut 3.4 kg to make 83.

The break-even first. The DOTS denominator at 83.0 kg is 740.66. To hold his score, his total may fall to 402.9 × 740.66 ÷ 500 = 596.8 kg. That is a permitted drop of 13.2 kg of total, or about 3.9 kg of total per kilogram of bodyweight.

Now the realistic outcomes. If the cut is mostly water, taken over the last few days before a 24-hour weigh-in, and he rehydrates well, he might give up 8 kg of total. That lands him at 602 kg and a DOTS score of 602 × 500 ÷ 740.66 = 406.4. He gained 3.5 points.

If the cut goes less well, which is common on a first attempt, and he loses 15 kg of total, he finishes at 595 kg for a score of 401.7. He lost 1.2 points.

So the entire upside of the cut is somewhere between minus one and plus four DOTS. For context, that is smaller than the swing from making your third deadlift instead of missing it.

The GL points picture is the same shape. At 86.4 kg his GL coefficient is 0.13566, giving 82.75 points. At 83.0 kg with a 602 kg total the coefficient is 0.13843, giving 83.33. A gain of 0.58 GL points for three and a half kilos of misery.

Option B: stay at 86.4 and compete in the 93 class.

No cut, no risk, and he arrives fed. His likely total is the full 610 or a little more, because he trained through without a deficit. Score stays around 403. The cost is that he is giving away 6.6 kg of allowable bodyweight against anyone else in his class who filled it.

Option C: grow into the 93 class over the next year.

If Diego ends the year at 92.0 kg, the DOTS denominator is 781.75, and to hold his 402.9 score he needs a total of 402.9 × 781.75 ÷ 500 = 629.9 kg. So 19.9 kg of extra total for 5.6 kg of bodyweight, which is about 3.6 kg of total per kilogram gained.

Is that achievable? For a lifter under about three years of serious training, usually yes and then some. For someone eight years in with a 610 total, honestly, probably not, and Option B becomes the sensible answer.

Walk-around weight versus stage weight

The gap between these two numbers is the thing that makes weight class decisions confusing, because people quote one and plan with the other.

Your walk-around weight is what you are on a normal Tuesday afternoon, fed, hydrated, clothed, mid-training block. Your stage weight is what the scale reads at official weigh-in, typically first thing in the morning, fasted and after whatever manipulation you have done.

For most lifters the natural gap between those two is somewhere around one to three kilograms with nothing more than an empty stomach and a normal night. That is the free part, and it is why a lifter walking around at 84.5 kg can often make 83 without doing anything anyone would call a cut.

Beyond that, you are into deliberate manipulation, and the mechanics of that depend enormously on whether your meet uses a 2-hour or a 24-hour weigh-in. That distinction changes what is sensible far more than most people realise, and it is covered properly in our practical weight cut guide.

The planning error I see most often is a lifter choosing a class based on their walk-around weight without checking what their morning weight actually is. Weigh yourself at the time of day your weigh-in happens, for a full week, before you decide anything. You may already be in the class you were planning to cut for.

Why most lifters below national level should not cut

This is the bit where I break with the usual advice hardest on standard meet-prep advice.

Cutting weight is presented as a normal part of competing, and at the top of the sport it is, because the margins there are genuinely thin and a tenth of a coefficient point decides medals. Below that, the margins are not thin. They are enormous. At a regional meet the gap between first and third in a class is routinely 30 or 40 kg of total, which no cut is going to bridge.

Meanwhile the cost is real and it is understated. A cut costs you training quality in the final weeks, when you should be sharpening. It adds a variable to meet day that you have never rehearsed. It makes your warm-up room experience worse. And the performance penalty from being underfed and underhydrated is not something you can reliably estimate in advance, which is exactly the sort of uncertainty you do not want on a day you have prepared twelve weeks for.

There is one honest counter-argument, and it is worth stating. Some lifters find that a small, slow, well-managed reduction in bodyweight over eight or ten weeks improves how they feel and move, particularly if they have been running a long gaining phase. That is not really a cut, it is a return to a sustainable weight, and it is fine.

The version I would avoid is the one where you are stripping several percent of bodyweight in the final week to squeeze into a class you have never made before, in a sport where nobody is watching. Planning your classes across a year

If you compete two or three times a year, class choice becomes a sequence rather than a single decision.

  1. Write down your bodyweight at the same time of day for a full week and take the average. That is your true baseline, not the number you remember.
  2. Identify the meets you actually intend to enter and their weigh-in formats. A 24-hour weigh-in and a 2-hour weigh-in belong in different plans.
  3. For each meet, pull the last two editions of results and note the entries and winning totals in the two classes nearest your baseline.
  4. Score your realistic total at both class limits using a coefficient calculator, and note the difference. If it is under five points, coefficient is not a reason to move.
  5. Decide which meet in the year is your priority. That is the one your bodyweight plan serves; the others are practice.
  6. Choose a direction and hold it for the whole year. Alternating between cutting and gaining across three meets is the reliable way to end the year weaker than you started.
  7. Book the bodyweight change to be finished two weeks before the meet, not two days. Whatever the format, arriving already at weight and eating normally beats arriving in a panic.
  8. Re-run step 4 four weeks out with your actual training numbers rather than your hopeful ones.

That sequence is unexciting, which is the point. Class choice is a planning problem, and planning problems reward being boring about them.

What goes wrong

Cutting for a class you cannot make is the classic. A lifter targets 83, arrives at 84.2, and has to lift in the 93 class anyway, having spent the week dehydrated for nothing. If your morning weight two weeks out is more than about two percent above the limit, be honest with yourself early.

Weighing in and then eating like it is a holiday is the second. The rebound window after weigh-in is a real opportunity and it is not unlimited. Eating four thousand calories of unfamiliar food in ninety minutes will not put your total back, it will put you in the toilet during squat warm-ups.

Then there is picking a class from an out-of-date list. Federations amend class structures and the internet does not update. Read the rulebook, not the forum post.

A subtler one: choosing the class before choosing the meet. Federations use different class lists and different coefficient formulas, so the optimal class genuinely depends on which meet you enter. Sort out the federation first.

Last, and this catches experienced lifters too, forgetting that the coefficient is applied to whatever total you actually post. A brilliant weight class decision paired with a bombed squat gives you no score at all. Rules, health and the things to verify yourself

Two caveats, both plainly meant.

Federation rules are the authority on classes, weigh-in windows, lot numbers and which coefficient decides awards, and they change. Everything described here reflects the mainstream position at the time of writing. The current rulebook for the federation sanctioning your meet overrides all of it.

Deliberate bodyweight manipulation, particularly rapid dehydration, carries real health risk. This article is about arithmetic, not medicine. The decision is smaller than it feels. For most lifters, most of the time, the coefficient difference between two adjacent classes is worth a handful of points, and the total you can post fed and rested is worth more than that.

So do the two-minute version. Score your realistic total at your current bodyweight and at the class limit below you, look at the difference, and then ask whether you would trade that difference for a week of feeling terrible. If the answer is obviously yes because you are chasing a national qualifying total, go and do it properly with help. If it is anything less than obvious, enter where you are.
