The salesman quotes 11,000 lb. The trailer you like weighs 7,600 lb loaded. The arithmetic looks generous, so you sign the paperwork, and four months later somebody at a rally with a portable scale tells you the rear axle of your truck is 380 lb over its rating and your rear tyres are past their sidewall number.
Nobody lied to you exactly. The tow rating on that window sticker is a real number produced by a real test. It answers a different question from the one you were asking.
Towing capacity vs payload is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the RV world, and it costs people money at the worst possible moment: after the trailer is already in the driveway. Tow rating asks how much mass your drivetrain, cooling system and brakes can drag up a grade and stop again. Payload asks how much weight your truck can carry on its own suspension, axles and tyres. Those are separate ceilings, and for almost every modern half-ton pickup, payload is the one you crash into first.
Here is the part people find hard to accept. Your truck can be thousands of pounds under its tow rating and still be illegally and dangerously overloaded, because the tongue of the trailer is pressing down on the back of the truck and that pressure is cargo. Not towed weight. Cargo.
This post walks the whole calculation with actual numbers, shows you where each figure lives on your vehicle, and gives you a way to work out the biggest trailer you can genuinely pull before you fall in love with one you can’t.
The short answer
Towing capacity is the maximum loaded trailer your vehicle is rated to pull. Payload is the maximum weight your vehicle can carry, and it includes passengers, everything in the cab and bed, the hitch hardware, and the trailer’s tongue or pin weight pressing down on the receiver or the bed.
Tongue weight usually runs 10 to 15 percent of a bumper-pull trailer’s loaded weight, and pin weight runs 15 to 25 percent on a fifth wheel. That load lands on your payload budget, not your tow rating.
So the real trailer ceiling is: door-sticker payload, minus passengers, minus hitch hardware, minus everything in the truck, divided by 0.13 for a travel trailer or 0.20 for a fifth wheel. On a typical crew-cab half-ton with a family aboard, that maths lands somewhere between 3,500 and 6,500 lb of trailer, which is far below the tow rating on the brochure.
Four ceilings, and every one of them applies at the same time
People treat these ratings like a menu. They are not a menu. You have to be under all of them simultaneously, and being comfortably under three of them tells you nothing about the fourth.
GVWR is the gross vehicle weight rating of the truck: the most the truck itself is allowed to weigh, fully loaded, with the tongue weight pressing on it. Payload is simply GVWR minus what the truck weighs empty.
GAWR is the gross axle weight rating, and there are two of them, front and rear. This is the one that catches trailer owners, because tongue weight sits behind the rear axle and levers weight off the front while piling it onto the back. You can pass GVWR and still fail rear GAWR.
GCWR is the gross combination weight rating: truck plus trailer plus everything in both, added together. This is the rating your engine, transmission and cooling system care about.
Maximum trailer weight, the tow rating, is what the brochure shouts about. It is derived from GCWR minus the weight of a base truck with one driver aboard.
There are two more limits that quietly sit underneath all of that. Your tyres have a maximum load stamped on the sidewall at a specific cold pressure, and four tyres under their rating still fails if one of them is over. And your hitch receiver has its own tongue and trailer ratings, usually printed on a label on the receiver itself, often with two sets of figures: one for weight-carrying and a higher one for weight-distributing.

Where the brochure tow rating actually comes from
Since roughly the mid-2010s, mainstream pickup manufacturers have published tow ratings tested against SAE J2807, a standard that specifies how the number must be produced. Before J2807 the figures were closer to marketing. The standard defines things like a launch on a 12 percent grade, a run up the Davis Dam grade in Arizona in high ambient temperature while holding a minimum speed, braking performance with the trailer connected, and handling tests. It brought discipline to a number that badly needed it.
What J2807 did not do is make the number describe your truck.
The tested configuration is the lightest, most tow-optimised version of that model line. Think the cab style, drivetrain and axle ratio that produce the best figure, with a single driver of about 150 lb and nothing else aboard. Your truck has a crew cab, four-wheel drive, a sunroof, heated leather, a bed liner, running boards, a tonneau cover, a heavier engine, and four people plus a dog in it.
Every pound of that is a pound off your payload. The tow rating barely moves. The payload falls off a cliff.
This is where I’d push back on how the industry talks. The tow rating is not a lie, it is an answer to a narrow engineering question, and treating it as a shopping number is what causes the damage. If dealers printed payload in the same font size, half the mismatched rigs on the road would not exist.
The yellow sticker beats every other number you will be shown
Open the driver’s door of your truck and look at the jamb. There is a yellow-and-white label, required under US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110, headed with tyre and loading information. On it is a sentence close to this: “The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXXX lbs.”
That figure is your payload. Not the brochure’s payload. Yours.
Three things about it that matter more than most people realise:
- It is calculated for your specific vehicle as built, so the sunroof and the four-wheel drive and the bigger engine have already been subtracted for you.
- It assumes a full tank of fuel. Fuel is already counted, so do not deduct it again.
- It does not know about anything added after the truck left the factory. Dealer-fitted bed liners, toolboxes, aftermarket bumpers, larger wheels and tyres, a camper shell, a slide-in toolbox, a fifth-wheel hitch bolted into the bed: none of those are subtracted. You have to subtract them yourself.
That third point is where a chunk of real-world overloading hides. A steel replacement bumper and a heavy-duty toolbox can quietly eat 200 lb before you have loaded a single camp chair.
Anyone can tell you to check the sticker. Fewer people tell you the sticker is a starting figure that you then have to reduce.
Turning payload into a trailer weight: the arithmetic
The formula is short. Getting honest inputs is the hard part, which is the whole reason we built the RV Payload Calculator to prompt for each line rather than ask you for one figure.

Maximum loaded trailer = available tongue budget ÷ 0.13 (bumper pull)
Maximum loaded trailer = available tongue budget ÷ 0.20 (fifth wheel)
Why 0.13 rather than 0.10? Because trailers rarely load to the bottom of their range. The battery, the propane bottles and the front storage bay all live ahead of the axles, so real loaded tongue weights on modern travel trailers tend to sit at the upper end of the 10 to 15 percent band. Planning at 10 percent is optimism dressed up as arithmetic. A worked example: Colin and Dana’s half-ton
Say Colin has a crew-cab half-ton, four-wheel drive, with a door sticker reading 1,580 lb. The window sticker on the same truck advertised a maximum trailer weight of 11,000 lb. He is shopping for a travel trailer with a GVWR of 7,700 lb, and he thinks he has 3,300 lb of headroom.
Let’s total what actually rides in the truck.

Payload left for the tongue: 1,580 − 1,105 = 475 lb.
Now divide. At 13 percent, 475 ÷ 0.13 = 3,654 lb of loaded trailer. At a generous 12 percent, 475 ÷ 0.12 = 3,958 lb. At 15 percent, which plenty of trailers land at once the front bay is full, 475 ÷ 0.15 = 3,167 lb.
Colin’s truck is rated to tow 11,000 lb and can carry the tongue of roughly a 3,700 lb trailer. The 7,700 lb trailer he is looking at will put somewhere around 1,000 lb on his hitch, which is 525 lb more payload than he owns.
He is not slightly over. He is over by a third of his entire payload, and the rear axle takes the brunt of it.
What can he do? He can strip the truck. Leave the generator and the firewood at home, take the tonneau off, travel with two people instead of four, and he might free up 400 lb. That gets him to roughly a 6,700 lb trailer, still short. The honest answer is that the trailer is wrong for the truck, or the truck is wrong for the trailer, and no accessory fixes it.
Run your own numbers in eight steps
- Read the yellow door sticker and write down the “occupants and cargo” figure. This is your only payload number. Ignore anything on a forum about what “that truck” carries.

- Subtract passengers and pets at real weights, not polite ones.
- Subtract hitch hardware. A weight distribution hitch with bars typically runs 60 to 100 lb. A fifth-wheel hitch, rails and all, commonly runs 150 to 250 lb, and gooseneck adapters vary widely.
- Subtract everything in the cab and bed, including the things you always carry and never think about: recovery gear, a spare battery, water bottles, the dog crate.
- Subtract anything fitted after the factory. Weigh the parts if you can, or use the manufacturer’s shipping weights.
- What remains is your tongue budget. Divide by 0.13 for a bumper pull or 0.20 for a fifth wheel to get the heaviest loaded trailer you can carry the tongue of. If percentages of this kind slow you down, the Percentage Calculator handles the division without the mental gymnastics.
- Cross-check GCWR and rear GAWR. Add your loaded truck weight to the trailer’s GVWR and compare against GCWR. Then check that the rear axle line on your scale ticket, hitched, sits under rear GAWR with margin.
Step 8 catches the people who pass steps 1 to 7. Rear GAWR in particular has a habit of failing quietly, because tongue weight does not land evenly on both axles: a portion of it actually lifts weight off the front axle and adds it to the rear, so the rear axle can gain more than the tongue weight itself.
What each truck class realistically pulls
The table below is illustrative, not a spec sheet. Payload varies enormously inside a single model line, and I have seen two trucks of the same badge and year differ by 700 lb. Use it to understand the shape of the problem, then use your own sticker.
The middle column assumes 700 lb of people, hitch and gear in the truck, which is a modest family load.

Two things to read off that table. The diesel row sits below the petrol row in the same class, because a diesel engine and its supporting hardware commonly add 700 to 800 lb to the truck, and every one of those pounds comes out of payload. Diesel buys you torque and GCWR, not carrying capacity. Then, once you pass the three-quarter-ton rows, payload stops being the binding constraint and GCWR, tow rating and tyre capacity take over. Those bumper-pull figures on the bottom rows are arithmetic, not permission.
The pattern that matters is in the top row. A well-optioned crew-cab half-ton frequently lands exactly where Colin landed.
Why fifth wheels finish off half-tons
Divide by 0.20 instead of 0.13 and the whole picture collapses.
Pin weight on a fifth wheel typically runs 15 to 25 percent of loaded trailer weight, and modern units with big front bedrooms, residential fridges and front-mounted generators sit near the top of that. Then add the hitch. A quality fifth-wheel hitch and its mounting rails commonly weigh 150 to 250 lb, and that sits in the bed permanently.
Work Colin’s truck as a fifth-wheel tow vehicle. Payload 1,580 lb. People and dog 535. Fifth-wheel hitch and rails 200. Bed cargo trimmed hard to 150. That leaves 695 lb of pin budget, which at 20 percent supports a trailer of roughly 3,475 lb.
There is no such fifth wheel. The lightest half-ton-targeted fifth wheels start somewhere around 7,000 to 9,000 lb loaded, and even the marketing-friendly ones put 1,400 lb or more in the bed.
This is why the phrase “half-ton towable” deserves suspicion. It usually means the trailer’s weight is below some half-ton’s tow rating, in a specific configuration, and it says nothing about whether your particular truck has 1,600 lb of payload sitting spare. A few very light, very short fifth wheels genuinely work behind a stripped-out half-ton with two people in it. Most do not, and the ones that do leave you with no margin for a full water tank.

Dry weight is close to fiction, so use GVWR
Trailer brochures lead with dry weight, sometimes labelled UVW or unloaded vehicle weight. It describes the unit as it left the factory: no fresh water, no propane in the bottles, frequently no battery, and often without the options fitted to the one you are buying. Awnings, second air conditioners, solar, upgraded suspension and slide-outs are extra.
Then you load it. Fresh water is about 8.34 lb per US gallon, so a 45-gallon tank is 375 lb. Two 30 lb propane bottles are roughly 130 lb filled, hardware included. A pair of lead-acid batteries is 100 to 130 lb. Dishes, bedding, clothes, tools, food, chairs, a mat, levelling blocks and a portable grill add up faster than anyone believes until they weigh it.
Plan against the trailer’s GVWR, which appears on its own federal certification label, usually on the left front sidewall. That is the heaviest the trailer is permitted to be, and it is a number the trailer cannot exceed without being illegal, so it is the right ceiling for planning. Most owners of family trailers end up within a few hundred pounds of GVWR by the second season. That is not a criticism, it is just what happens when four people live in a box for a fortnight.
Where people get this wrong
The mistakes repeat with unnerving consistency.
Using the brochure payload rather than the door sticker is the classic. So is forgetting that the hitch itself is cargo, which surprises people every time. Assuming the trailer will sit at exactly 10 percent tongue weight is another, and it is always the optimistic direction.
Then there is the airbag question. Air springs, helper springs and heavier-rate leaf packs improve how the truck rides and stops it squatting, and they are genuinely worth having on a rig that runs near its limits. They do not raise GVWR or GAWR by one pound. The rating is a certification of the whole vehicle as assembled, not a description of how the springs feel. The same goes for bigger tyres: fitting Load Range E tyres to a truck whose rear GAWR is 3,900 lb does not give you a 4,400 lb rear axle.
I’d also flag the “everyone does it” argument, which you will meet in every campground. Plenty of people do tow overloaded, and most of them get away with it most of the time. That is survivorship talking. The failure modes are heat-driven and cumulative, and they show up on the third hour of a hot climb rather than in the first mile. One more: weighing the truck empty and calling it done. Weigh it loaded, with the family in it, on the day you would actually leave. Empty numbers flatter everyone.
Check your own numbers, not mine
Every figure in this post is either arithmetic you can repeat or a range labelled as illustrative. Ratings differ by model year, cab, drivetrain, axle ratio, engine and option package, and they are revised between years. The only authoritative sources for your vehicle are the certification and tyre-loading labels on the vehicle itself, the owner’s manual, and the manufacturer’s towing guide for your exact model year.
Licensing is a separate question again. Some US states require an upgraded non-commercial licence class above certain combination weights or trailer weights, California and Texas among them, and the thresholds differ. Frequently asked questions
Does towing capacity include the weight of the trailer’s cargo?
Yes. A tow rating applies to the loaded trailer as it rolls down the road, not to the dry weight printed in the brochure. Water, propane, batteries, food, bedding and gear all count. Use the trailer’s GVWR when you plan, because that is the heaviest the trailer is allowed to be, and most owners end up close to it.
Why is my truck’s payload lower than the brochure said?
Brochure figures describe the lightest version of that model, usually a plain cab with the smallest engine and fewest options. Every option you added has weight, and weight added to the truck comes straight out of payload. The yellow sticker in your door jamb is calculated for your specific truck as it left the factory, which is why it is lower. It also does not account for anything fitted afterwards, so your working payload is lower still.
Can a half-ton truck tow a fifth wheel?
A few can, with a short and deliberately light fifth wheel, and only if you keep the truck almost empty. Pin weight typically runs 15 to 25 percent of the loaded trailer, so a 9,000 lb fifth wheel puts roughly 1,800 lb in the bed. Most half-ton crew cabs do not have that much payload left after people and gear, and the fifth-wheel hitch alone can take 200 lb of it.
Does a weight distribution hitch increase my payload?
No. A weight distribution hitch moves load between axles so the front of the truck stays planted and the rear stops squatting. It does not change GVWR, payload or tow rating. The full tongue weight still counts against payload, and the hitch hardware itself adds another 50 to 100 lb that also comes out of your budget. It is a handling and geometry device, not a capacity upgrade.
Is dry weight or GVWR the number I should use for the trailer?
GVWR. Dry weight, sometimes printed as UVW, is the trailer as it left the factory with no water, no propane, no battery in some cases, and often without the options fitted to your unit. Real loaded weights land far above it. Planning against GVWR means the trailer cannot surprise you later, and it costs you nothing except a slightly smaller shopping list.
What is GCWR and how do I check it?
GCWR is the maximum combined weight of the loaded tow vehicle and the loaded trailer together. Find it in your owner’s manual or the towing guide for your model year, since it is rarely on a sticker. To check it, weigh the truck and trailer hitched at a public scale and add the axle lines together, then compare that total against the rating.
How to use all this
Go and look at your door jamb. Write the number down. Then write down every person, animal and object that travels with you, weigh the ones you can, and subtract honestly. Whatever survives that subtraction is the tongue weight you own, and dividing it by 0.13 or 0.20 gives you the trailer you can genuinely pull.
If the answer is smaller than the trailer in your driveway, you have three levers and only three: carry less in the truck, choose a lighter trailer, or buy more truck. Airbags, bigger tyres and a stronger hitch change none of it.
The good news is that the calculation takes about twenty minutes and never has to be done again unless you change vehicles. Do it once, tape the figure inside a cupboard door, and shop from it.
