With that little total margin you would not add much more, and a heavier trailer tongue would land on the rear axle first. Switch towing on and enter both. The combined weight is 9,600 plus 8,500, so 18,100 pounds against a 20,000 pound GCWR. That leaves 3,300 pounds of combined headroom at 90.5 percent of the rating, which is green. If you wanted to size a different trailer instead, the same arithmetic runs backwards: the GCWR minus the loaded truck gives roughly 10,400 pounds of trailer the combination could legally handle before anything else binds.
Do not stop at the combined number, though. Enter the tongue weight too. At roughly 10 to 15 percent of a loaded trailer, this one might sit near 950 pounds, and against a 1,200 pound hitch rating that is 79 percent and comfortable. Push it to a fifth wheel at 20 percent and the pin load becomes a different story entirely, landing squarely on the rear axle.
