A worked example: bench to a 100 kg working set
Say your top set for the day is 100 kg on the bench. A clean ladder up to it might look like this. Start with the empty 20 kg bar for eight reps to move the shoulders and groove the path. Step to 40 kg, about 40 percent, for five reps. Move to 60 kg, around 60 percent, for three reps. Take 72.5 kg, roughly 73 percent, for two reps. Then 82.5 kg, about 83 percent, for a single. Finish the ramp at 92.5 kg, a shade over 90 percent, for one rep. Now take your 100 kg working set fresh.
That is five warm-up sets after the empty bar, and notice the shape. The jumps start large, 20 kg from bar to 40, then shrink to 10 kg at the very top. The reps fall from eight to a single. By the time you reach 92.5 kg you have felt a load close to your working weight, so the 100 kg set will not feel like a shock, yet you have spent almost no energy getting there. A worked example: squat to a 180 kg opener
Now take a heavier target, a 180 kg squat opener at a meet. Because the distance from the empty bar to 180 kg is large, the ladder needs more rungs to keep each jump reasonable. Begin with the 20 kg bar for eight reps. Step to roughly a third of the target for five reps, then to around half for four, then to about two-thirds for three. Take a rung near 79 percent for two reps, one near 86 percent for a single, and a last single around 92 percent. Then walk out and take your 180 kg opener.
That is seven warm-up sets for a heavier opener, two more than the bench example, which is exactly right. The jumps run large at the bottom and shrink toward the top, and the reps drop from eight to one. Your last warm-up single sits within about eight percent of the opener, close enough to prime the pattern but far enough to leave you fresh for the platform.
Choosing your number of warm-up sets
The right number of rungs depends mostly on how far you are climbing. A lighter working weight sits close to the empty bar, so three or four rungs plus the bar cover the distance with sensible jumps. A heavy opener sits far above the bar, so it takes five, six, or seven rungs to avoid jumps that are too big to be useful.

Light rungs need only the time to swap plates, but the last one or two heavy singles deserve a minute or three so they feel crisp.
The classic error runs the other way: doing too many reps with heavy warm-up weights. A lifter who benches a triple at 90 percent in warm-up has already done a brutal set and will wonder why the real one feels awful. The opposite mistake is skipping rungs and jumping straight to something heavy, which is jarring and risky because the pattern feels unfamiliar and the load feels heavier than it should.
Two more worth naming. At a meet, warming up too far in advance and then sitting cold for twenty minutes wastes the whole ramp, so time the ladder to your call rather than to the clock. And do not use the same seven-rung ladder for a light day as for a heavy opener; let the number of rungs shrink when the target is close to the bar. Chasing exact percentages to the kilo is not worth restacking the bar over.

Warming up for a one-rep max or a PR
