The third form finds the whole when you know the part and the rate. You divide the part by the rate expressed as a decimal. In words, whole equals part divided by rate. If 25 percent of a class is 7 students, the whole class is 7 divided by 0.25, which is 28 students.
Percentage change is the fourth pattern, and it deserves its own line because so many people trip over it. You subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. The old value is always the base you divide by, and forgetting that is the most common percentage mistake there is.

Percentage decrease. A laptop drops from 1200 to 900 during a sale. The fall is 300, and 300 divided by the original 1200 is 0.25, so the price dropped by 25 percent. Again the base is the starting number.
Reverse percentage. A receipt shows a total of 118 dollars, and you know it includes 18 percent tax. To find the price before tax, divide 118 by 1.18, which gives 100. The tax portion is therefore 18 dollars. If a sale price of 68 dollars is what remains after 15 percent was knocked off, divide 68 by 0.85 to recover the original 80 dollars.
Adding and removing a percentage in one step. To add 12 percent to 250, multiply by 1.12 for 280. To remove 12 percent from 250, multiply by 0.88 for 220. Those single multipliers save a lot of time once you are comfortable with them.

- Assuming an increase and a decrease cancel out. A 20 percent rise followed by a 20 percent fall does not bring you back to where you started. Take 100, add 20 percent to reach 120, then take 20 percent off 120, which removes 24 and leaves 96. - Adding percentages that belong to different wholes. If 40 percent of one group and 40 percent of a much larger group both go one way, you cannot simply say 80 percent of anything. - Confusing percentage change with percentage points. This one appears constantly in news and finance. If an interest rate moves from 4 percent to 6 percent, that is a rise of 2 percentage points, but a 50 percent increase in the rate itself.
